A big thank you to everyone involved in our event last week: Windmill Hill City Farm for hosting us beautifully; Ed from Bristol Waste Company for his talk and for answering some of our knotty questions, and to Stacey and Lidia from Zero Green for talking through some of the options for plastic free products. We learned that:
Bristol Waste passes any profit on to the council; for them, our waste is a resource – they can make £ from recycling but landfill costs; nothing BW collects leaves the UK as waste; binmen walk about 10 miles a day… and that you should leave the plastic lids on plastic bottles but take them off Tetra Paks; foil should be scrunched up into fist-sized balls, greasy cardboard is ok but food debris is not.

Ellie Freeman talked about TerraCycle UK who collect various items that cannot be recycled curbside. Anyone can become a collector and the money raised can go to a charity of your choice. The Southville Centre and Windmill Hill City Farm collect baby food pouches through this scheme.

We also mentioned OLIO for passing on unwanted food and Too Good To Go, a similar principle for restaurants. You may also have heard of FareShare who redirect food surplus to those in need.
